Lunchtime Studies

Just a quick little update after a weekend of more homework prep and larger blog post planning - some lunchtime studies of the amazing Creaturebox team. Because master studies don't necessarily have to mean old paintings!

Learning to push forms by understanding how the masters do it.

Rusty: The Tin Can Lawman

I took advantage of the beginning of the mid term break to finish off Sheriff Rusty. I had sooo much fun painting this, and it was really interesting to re-approach it with some of the newly learned concepts from Painting Drama 2. I'll post up some of the WIP and process images later this week, but for now I'm going to step back from this and start looking at pushing the design a bit more and exploring some of the outlaw mechs of Rusty's world!

Painting Drama 2: Week 5 Assignment

This week was another intense one before the midterm break - Our focus was on observing the atmospheric and lighting relationships that occur at different times of the day. As well as focusing on building suitable palettes and gathering accurate reference, I also had to concentrate on refining my technique and work to streamline my colour sketch process. It was definitely another great learning exercise that's had me looking at light in a new way (red asphalt in dusk light on my walk home last night, how does that work?!), which is just as well as we've got an exciting monster assignment to be working on til class resumes. Stay tuned for more!

Painting Drama 2: Week 4 Assignment

Another week, another couple of paintings for PD2! Although it's been a really steep learning curve (and a LOT of information to take in), the concepts that are being taught about colour theory and exercising control in paintings are really starting to take hold. Although these were both pretty quick paintings this week, I'm please with how they've turned out and may even go back in to polish them up a bit more after class. For now though, I've got this Saturday's class to digest and another set of paintings to crack on with, so I'd best get started!

Quick note that I used photo reference from the fantastic Amethystdreams on Deviant Art. Go give them some love for producing such great content!

I also managed to get out in the sunshine yesterday for a couple of hours to experiment with some plein-air painting on the iPad. I'd say as a first attempt it was semi successful, but I'm definitely looking forward to having a go at it again soon as the weather improves.

Painting Drama 2: Week 3 Assignment

We're now well into week 4 of Painting Drama 2, and once again I can feel the familiar ache of the art muscles going through a phase of painfully intensive growth. I'm in the middle of another couple of paintings for this week, but in the meantime here's one of my assignments from last week. It's not quite a finished piece - I'm hoping to get chance to circle back around to it after class to complete it, but I thought it'd be interesting to share, as I learned a tremendous amount in the process of it.
