Drink & Draw #4

It was a bit of a quiet one last night at D&D, but with a smaller table came focus and more sketching! It was also the first time I think I've actually been happy with my drawing at D&D, as before I'd taken a while to settle down. This time, I just got going! (also, I switched up to an A4 sketchbook, which helped tremendously).

I also inked one of Fwah Storm's sketches, which was great fun - I even cracked out some of the Copic markers to have a bit of a play and push a bit more of an animated/cell shaded style.

I had waaaay too much fun drawing this guy.

Optimus Prime

Finally finished Prime, after he'd been sat at 95% done for the past week! I had so much fun painting this, and as an exercise in flat surface and specular rendering, I feel I've learned a lot from this one. Also the first time in a long time that I've done anything Transformers related, and it felt good to get to grips with them again. Right, onto the next painting!

In other news, Drink and Draw tonight, and a review of the Hex JaJa iPad stylus to come soon.

Perspective Tool & Optimus Prime WIP 2

Here's a tool that was stumbled upon by my coursemate (and all round superstar artist) Sula Moon. Go check out her work, then come back. I'm serious. GO NOW!

...OK, you're back! So here's the link to the tool. It's similar to a perspective tool that was released by one of the guys at EPIC earlier this year, but the great thing is that it's Mac friendly! I've been playing around with it a bit this morning, and it's super useful for grid creation (and is about 50% quicker and more flexible than my current method!).

And finally - Here's another WIP from last night's painting session on Optimus Prime. Another 2 hours or so logged, I streamed for the first, but the second boffed up recording sadly. Oh well! Will see if I can get back on with it today, as I've really been enjoying trying to tackle these reflective surfaces. Not there yet, but definitely getting there. I also redrew Prime's head as it was bugging me, I think it works much better now!

Update and Optimus Prime WIP

Here's a work in progress shot of the painting I started this afternoon as a bit of a wind down after a manic week of work. I started with a sketch from earlier this year, and went in quickly blocking out values with the lasso and gradient tools. Clipping masks and screen/multiply layers were really useful here! Using this method, I actually got the entire underpainting done in about an hour, which meant I could power straight onto to layering in colour (with colour and multiply layers in tandem) ready for detailing. I streamed a bit this afternoon, which can be found over on my channel here. Anyhow, more to follow!

(above: Sketch - 30mins approx, Value and colour block - 2hrs)

In other news, Drink and Draw is going from strength to strength; I'll be putting up a post going into more detail about this in the near future. Oh, and I picked up the 'Remember Me' artbook by the tremendous team at Dontnod studios and OH MY LORD...It's gorgeous!! (been thoroughly enjoying the game too!)

Lunchtime Study August 1st

It's been a busy couple of days with work, so I ended up finishing this across two lunchtimes. Anyhow, the latest study. I tried to pick a harder expression and lighting situation, to slowly start ramping these up as I get more under my belt.
