The Walking Dead + Michelangelo WIP

I finally started painting up the Mikey sketch this weekend. I spent a good while playing around with some colour comps and assembling reference (Oatley training starting to finally kick in!), before starting with the sorting out the background. Looking back on it now, I've no idea how I managed to warp the flat brick texture I had to fit around a receding curved cylindrical shape (and match up the tiled brick texture!). It'll serve as a place holder until I paint over, but I think it works pretty well; I'm also quite enjoying the spiral the shadows between lanterns create. More to follow soon!

Also here's a sketch from one evening last week, everyone's favourite subject matter: ZOMBIES!

I either need to stop watching the Turtles cartoon, or start looking for a job at Nickelodeon :-P I drew this last night for my buddy Bruce, as Mikey has always been his favourite Turtle, and after the character revamp of the new series I think I'm starting to lean the same way! I love the fact that his nunchaku doubles up as kusarigama, so I had to one in. If I get chance later this week, I may start a paint over on this, but it's going to be quite a busy one with another Oatley Academy live session and work on my Audacious Accomplishment pending.

This weekend also saw a whole host of information arrive about the International Art and Design Symposium from Concept Art in May/June. Suffice to say I'm more than a little excited, the current programme looks like it's going from strength to strength!

Art of Dead Space

I managed to track down and import a copy of the original Art of Dead Space book from 2008! Cannot wait to sit down and read through it... So much gorgeous artwork! (...even if it is about A5 sized!)

Another life drawing sketch

Another life drawing sketch that I drew this lunchtime. I'm still working away on coursework and my Audacious Accomplishment in the background, but got to keep up with the technical studies as well! This toned sketch book is working really nicely, but I think on the next few I might start to vary the pencil density by switching back to graphite over the Col-erase pencils. It could also be quite cool to start to introduce a bit more ink work into the sketches... I'll have a play!

I also went to see Wreck It Ralph this weekend (FINALLY released here over in the UK!) and Disney Animation well and truly knocked it out of the park. A great movie with tons of lovely nods to retro and vintage gaming, as well as great story telling and concept work. The 'art of' book is already on my Amazon wishlist..!

I painted over my Leo sketch from last week for a bit of fun last night whilst listening to Snow Crash as a wind down to the end of the week. I'd previously flatted it, so could jump in on the fun bit; all in all I probably spent about 4hrs on this. I also tried out a couple of new brushes instead of my regular 'go to' chalk brush which was good fun, and led to me finding a couple of cool texture brushes!

Right, on with the weekend! :-)

Value Sketches

I got a chance last night to try out this new toned sketchbook whilst doing a bit of life drawing/value study via The Drawing Script. I really like the potential the lighter value pencil brings and think I'll aim to do all life drawing and studies this way in future.

I also managed last night to finally start to catch up on my OA homework, which was great fun and once again thoroughly brain teasing. Still feeling really pumped though - this course is like being on creative steroids!

Dark Vengeance

"..and they shall know no fear."

I guess it was only a matter of time before I got around to drawing on of the Emperor's finest (as I've been listening the Horus Heresy audiobooks from the Black Library). I don't think I've drawn a Space Marine (let alone a Dark Angel!) since my rough book covers from school (suffice to say, at least 12 years!). Had a lot of fun experimenting with Col-erase and colourless blending markers to create softer tones, although was still trying to keep it relatively sketchy. I've just received a toned sketchbook in the post which I'm really excited to give a go (along with some white Col-erase pencils for creating highlight tones). Hopefully starting with a mid tone will allow for some more varied value sketches and studies.

Hmm.. don't think this is going to be the last Space Marine I draw... :-D

Leonardo Sketch

Here's a sketch I did last night - Leonardo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was always a Donatello fan (my brother was always Leo!), but once I started with the gesture I knew this had to be Leo. Really loving the Turtles 2012 cartoon and can't wait for it to come back after it's mid season break!

Other than that, I'm hard at work on my Oatley Academy homework and on starting to plot out my Audacious Accomplishment, and all of the redesign work that's going to entail. Stay tuned!
